Digital media for publishers


Digital media is very much on the increase in its many forms. From web sites, to emails, to blogs through to digital editions; content creators are using technology to both distribute and to improve readers’ “user experience”. Digital technologies of course provide a great way for readers to interact with content and the publisher.

Digital Editions

Our experience shows that digital editions are the premium vehicle for publishers to disseminate content. Digital editions are largely based on Flash software (and increasingly based on html5) and in essence take a document designed for print and translate that to a digital vehicle. Digital editions are a proven low cost way to increase circulation online.

Digital editions are similar to but not identical to ezines in that many ezines are purpose built for a digital environment.

Our view on digital editions is that it is very important for the publisher to retain control. There are plenty of companies who will offer the publication of digital editions on a pay-per-page basis. Their business model is based on generating revenue by charging a fee for every page published which proves very expensive for frequent publishers or for those who produce long documents e.g. prospectuses or annual reports. In addition many suppliers retain hosting meaning your readers will need to go outside of your web environment to access your content.  Retaining control of hosting is critical. Forms of digital editions can also use content management systems(CMS) to populate websites (that look like ebooks). This is effective for catalogues where content is changing often and where companies are using frequent outbound promotions through email marketing.

Email

Another common method for publishing content is to use a combination of html email and web pages. Html emails improve the readability and aesthetics of the message by facilitating the display of graphic material including images and special typographic treatments. Usually the html email displays visual branding and an index-like precis of articles. The index is hot linked to series of web pages.

There are numerous free software-as-a-service email providers like MailChimp and Aweber that are able to build and distribute emails.
